Trout tour in Sweden with IMAGO

As a half Dansk guy, i told my self to never set a foot over swedish boarders. Well it all came different and at the end i had no regrets at all.

I got invited to join the IMAGO guys for a 4 day wilderness trip in the tundras of swedish lapland. On board as well where Jon and Elias, two young enthusiastic filmer and flyfisherman from sweden.

Fist of all my luggage didnt arrive in Kiruna, aaargghhhh....bummer.

After buying a sleeping bag and some other clothes we flew out with a helicopter to small river, wich name is way to complicated to remember.

Anyways, as a man out in the wilderness without any gear, i was lucky to get all the support from John and Alex. Waders, boots, a rod, some flies and ready to go.

John told us that the avarage trout weighs around 1 kilo, as well there will be char and grayling around.

On sunday morning our tent was gone, what happend, does it got stolen ? No ! Over night the wind picked up to around 120 km/h and just killed our tent. Lucky the guys been still hung over enough to keep on sleeping in the storm.

Fishing at some points was still possible, no dryflies but streamer, up in the wind and there goes a 25metre roll cast with a thungsten woolybugger.

Lucky the wind drops at the evening and the chopper takes us to a new river.

We build up our base camp along the waterfalls of the Rautas river. Good thing about the falls, it separates the grayling from the trout.

Above the falls we had the outrun of the lake full of decent brownies, wich was perfect for floattube fishing.

Alex was able to land a beautyful 2.5 kg brown that day.

Below the falls was all grayling terratory, ohh boy, it gets on your arms catching grayling all day long. No matter what you put on, dryflies, nymph or streamer, they go for it in any situation, deaddrift, skated etc..:

I wished we could stay for a few more days but we run out of  beer wich makes camping less fun ;-)

Thanks for this awesome trip !!

I'm looking forward to next summer guys, ill be back..hasta la vista baby...

New Guideline Doublehand Rod

Last weekend i had the chance to get doublehand instructions by Michael Mauri, one of the well known fly- and trickcast Instructors in Europe.

I was able to cast the newest baby of the Guideline "Le Cie" doublehand series.

This rod not even looks great its casting ability is simply amazing.

I have to say, even a non professional doublehand caster like me, gets easy hooked up and i am looking forward to go speycasting around my home rivers, with a rod like this.

Facts: "Le Cie" 12.6", med/fast action, class 6/7#,  4 pieces, 197 gr. Price ca. 550.- euros

Go out and try it yourself !!

12.- 14. June Bregenzerache Troutstalkers Invasion

All once in a year the troutstalkers meeting took place in the beautiful Bregenzerforest.

This time we set a new record of 17 fishermen. The grill was constantly on fire and the pools been fished hardly.

It seemed that the stocking of rainbows took a bit overhand due a lack of browns and graylings.

Unlucky the Kajak dudes held a event on sunday, wich resulted in a constant muddy flow of the hydro powerplant, to provide enough water for the rafters.

We still had a great weekend with lots of sunshine and some good fishing.

We all look forward to the next meeting.

29.April - 21.May Trip to Cuba

First time to Cuba, all we knew about it was that since 50 years the time stood still.

Old cars, old streets, no 7eleven or fastfood chains, the people are as poor as it gets but still  happy and openhearted.

The nature is stunning and because all the waste gets recycled for other needs.

We hired a rental car and cruised around the archipel for the first 2 weeks.

Sleeping "casa particulares" is by far the best way to stay in Cuba. Local hospitality at its best, friendly people, awesome food and lots of rum to drink.

The fishing was experimental, with no tropical saltwater experince at all we had no clue what to expect in the water.

We're catching all sorts of fish from the shore without even knowing the name of the fish we caught.

The third week we booked some guides for Bonefish and Tarpon.

Las Salina the Bonefish hotspot, located on the Zapata pennisulas nature reserve park , wich allows only 6 fisherman per day to enter.

Endless flats only 2 feet deep and plenty of Bones made this place an epic experience.

Rio Hauticuanico, the other spot we fished , as well located on the Zapata penninsula, the locals call it the amazon of cuba.

A big riversystem full of mangroves feeded by subterrain springwater of the nearby mountain chains.

The guide new exactly how to find the Tarpon, only problem was i had no sinking line on me the first day. Result: 0 Tarpon

Next day i was ready with a 30 feet fast sinking tip and the action was on fire.

I never had such a fight in 15 to 20 feet wide riverarm full of mangrove roots.

Even i was only able to land the baby Tarpons around 10-15 pound, this was the most exciting flyfishing by far.

3 Weeks went by in notime and we had to leave Cuba and its lovley people...

We got ask a lot if we'll come back.....to be honest, we still dont know.

21. - 24. Mai Belly Boot Fly Fishing Session at Lac de Joux et Lac Brennet

Once again we where hitting the lakes in Vallé de joux.

Well known for the good amount of solid pikes we were all psyched out for our 3 day trip.

Our Campervan "The Legend" was all set and after 3 hour drive we finally arrived on our secret camping spot.

Rudy and Jiro already awaited us with a nice 8 pound opening pike.

The session was on the next morning, pumping up the bellyboats, sharpen the hooks and setting up our pike gear.

First day.....nothing happend beside some small weed pikes.

Second day....still nothing happend

Third day... whats up, where are all the big pikes?

Finally the solution, some locals told us we've came the wrong week!!

How come??  We got told that the Perch are about to spawn and all stay in deep water.

Ok clear so far but what about the Pike?!!

They just stay on the ground of the deep water and wait for the Perch swarm to show up.

Ahhh now this makes sense, so the only chance to get some big ones will be to serve them Perch in the deep.

Well how to serve 'em Perch when they not around ?!!

Nice thing about fishing....you always learn something new.

We still had all a great weekend even without big Pikes and next year we'll avoid this particulary time of the season.

May 09 Pike Opening Lake Zurich

Jiro starts with a nice Pike of 83 cm, a good omen for the rest of the saison.

10. -13. April 09 Mittersill Braurup Opening (Troutstalkers.ch)

It was i fully sunny weekend.. More Pics in the Galarie.

1. March 09 Browntrout season opening in downtown Zürich

Finaly 1st of March, the waiting period is over and the motivation as high as it gets.

We have perfect water conditions , low and clear, most of the other fisherman hook fish with dead minnows tied on a system, we stick with our flyrods try to hook fish on streamers.

The result is poor that day, only one take and not a single hook up, are we doing anthing wrong or do the fish get smarter every year...we dont know.

At the evening hours we change to nymphs and finally we could land a fish.

No Trout insted a Grayling appears on the surface, they much harder to find then Trout but they still in spawning, quick back to the water.

After releasing the Grayling we pack up our gear and head back home.

Its hard work to catch fish some days, but a bad day fishing is still a 1000 times better than a good day at work.

Januar Icefishing at Oeschinensee

Brrrrrrr... thats all we can say -25°celsius and the fish didnt liked our baits that day.

Beautiful surounding kep us stunning all day and the sledride down to the parkinglot is a legend.

We'll be offering Icefishing Trips for next Winter 09/10 , so stay tuned...

26. December Trout Season Opening Lake Zürich

Well for once we left our Flyrods back home and tryed to hook some laketrouts on a spinning rod.

I guess the biggest thing we catch these days are cold feet and frozen fingers.

Pascal was able to land a 15 inch trout just after new years eve but thats about it.

We had some chasers and hits but no decent fish landed, we'll keep on trying and we'll let you know if any big ones get on the hook.

Looking forward to get milder thempratures and no more ice in the rings.

Soon we let you know !!

18.-25.October 2008 Mittersill Austria

Once more we where visting mittersill,

October is the perfect time to catch big graylings and trouts, the water gets gin clear and runs on low level . The weather was on our side as we had 1 week of pure sunshine.

Our friend Dani joined us for his first flyfishing trip and he rocked the rivers big time as he caught nice graylings and trouts on dryflies.

The biggest fish of the week went to Pascal , a solid grayling of 52 cm.

We're about to plan a guided week in May 09 so stay tuned for further information.

9.October 08 keep on fishing in paradise

Thanks for everything you have done for our beautiful sport!

12.-14. Sept.08 Grayling stalking Engadin

The weatherforecast for the weekend looked very bad, good thing was that the river Inn runs out of a few lakes so the water didnt got any coloured.

We took our new fishing van for a first test over  the alps and it worked very well. It took us about 4 h to reach Surlej where we stayed at the hollyday flat of Andreas Grandparents.

On fridays we where only allowed to fish the lakes and so we did, we where able to land a few small brownies on dryfly but nothing big enough to cook for dinner.

On fryday evening the rest of the troutstalkers gang arrived in Zuoz and Röbi+Petra made some awsome dinner for us.

Saturday and sunday we finally could fish the river Inn. It poored down cats and dogs but the graylings kept on rising.

The only fly that seems to work good where super small ants and bugs, all in colour black and hook size 18-22#.

Even when you pulled the fly under water and draged em into a wetfly swing, brought some nice fish to rise.

Even the weather was crap we still had a good time fishing for grayling and trout. Its a bit sad that the season up there is already over but we looking forward to be there again next summer.

6.8.08 Lake Zürich Pike

1.-3. Aug. 2008 Bellyboat Flyfishing at Lac de Brenet

Finally 1. of August and 3 Days off Work, time to hit the Road and fish the Lakes in the Valley de Joux. For 10.- Bucks we got the Daylicense at the local Bakery wich allows us to fish all 3 Lakes from Shore or Boat.

We brought our Bellyboats with us wich seems to be the perfect solution for the Lac Brenet.

This Lake is about 2 km Long and 400 m wide and got heaps of weedbanks around. We installed our Basecamp right at the Lake, it was cloudy and still a bit raining that Day but suposed to clear up for the Weekend.

After we set up our Gear wich took us about 1 hour we where ready to hit the Water, it doesnt took long till Tom gets his first Pike hooked on a Pooper in shallow Water. A solid fish just shortly under 1 m wich we released again in hope to get a bigger one.

The water in the Lake was about 24 °C and perfect for Boardshorts fishing and Sun tanning.

We invaded  the Local Tearoom every morning for Coffe and Toilet business. The local folks where all very friendly and mellow so we got  a kind in the same mood wich resulted in that we never made it before 10:00 in to the water.

The pike seemed a bit lazy at saturday but we still could catch some decent ones to chuck on the grill for dinner.

3 Days went by in no time and the time seems to be flying by while you are fishing. I could  have stayed easy for a whole week and fish my ass off. We come back for sure...sooner or later.

12.-25. Mai 2008 Mittersill Austria

Brookie

Just came back from the trip to Austria. 2 weeks of fishing seems long enough but i could have stayed easy another 2 weeks.

The hotel Braurup in Mittersill owns the biggest privat fishingwaters in whole Austria, wich means over a 130km of rivers and creeks, 4 cristal clear mountain lakes and 3 stillwater reservoirs.

Even i have been there for many times now i still havent seen all the waters yet, its just too big and offers many options to fish.

The first week was great, we hit the first summerdays and the fish started to be more active.

It wasnt pure dryfly time so the nymph fishing was the thing to do. We where able to witness the Grayling spawning in  some of the higher regions like the Krimmleraache wich was awsome to watch.

The main River in the region , the Salzach contains a lot of wild big trouts and grayling and as soon the Summer hits in it brings a lot of water and gets milky.

No matter of the water colour the fish are eating but it needed heavy nymphs or streamer to reach the ground in fast running water.

The 2nd week we had some bad luck with the weather, it cooled down to almost 5°C  and the fish didnt liked it. We still where able to land some nice fish mainly on nymphs but not the big ones as we hoped.

Two weeks went by in no time, nice fish have been catched and funny stories been told, im sure ill be back as soon as possible...

1. Mai 08 Pike Season Opening

The pike seem to be hungry after the long winter, first day of the season im always out on the bellyboat, its the easyest way to cast along the shallow shore.

It took me only 5 casts to get the first pike hooked, not a biggie with his 55 cm but i still got the whole day to come.

After 2 hours casting it was time to chuck a meat on the grill and warm up my ass on the fire. 5 pike landed 3 lost and several hits was ok for halftime.

In the afternoon i checked out the tree covered shore where a lot of brocken trees hang into the water, i get hit after hit but all in the 40 to 60 cm range.

By the end of the day i was able to land 16 pike, lost 5 in drill and countles hits on the streamer and popper.

It seems to be a good pike season to come up and im be back the next day with Ivan to get some more pike action.

26. April 08 Glarnerland CH

Today i wanna check out some of Glarnerland's springcreeks and my buddy Joseph from Wisconsin joins me.

First stop its the upper Linth close to the Klausen Pass, Slilghtly milky colored water as you can see on the pics above makes the stalking a bit more easy, the water is still bloody cold and the level still above normal.

The heavy rainfalls the days before makes the fish stay in there holes, we able to get some but its not big feeding time.

We move on to flick a few casts at the Sernf, a nother creek with some nice pools, it gets fished a lot and for that reason, it holds only small trout.

After a quick munchie stop at Mickey D's we go for a dusk patrol along the Löntsch.

This creek runs out of the Klöntaler lake and the water is crystalclear. The Sun sets and the fish starting to feed, a Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph seems to be the best fly and even some Rainbows get on the hook but they're all small fish too.

I think creeks like those we fished today can't hold all the fishing pressure, every trout who reaches the min. lengh gets taken out and whats left is not able to spawn,

its a bit sad but true.

Anyway we had a nice and sunny day and enjoyed to be outdoors, i hope more days like this are about to come up...

I'll let you know !!

20.April 08 Gadmerwasser Berner Oberland CH

Beautyful day for springcreek fishing, the trout are  fit like little Ben Jonson's on dope.

Small hare's ear nymph's  on black bead heads do a great job, its nice to stalk along the big boulders in this narow gore.

Some big pools up to 4 meters deep hold some trout around the 2 pound mark but the bastards are spooky as hell today, no wonder the water is gin clear , one wrong move and they are gone for good.

We able to land some decent fish but not the real big buggers...maybe next time.

A lot of climbing is included to reach some of the remote pools in this valley, the good thing is, not a lot of the older local guys come here.

6 hours of rock hopping and sneaking around get us all pumped out, we'll be back for some more, soon.....
